The science behind the Audicus Online Hearing Test.
How Audicus created the first online hearing test.
Our team, led by a neuroscience engineer, spent 2 years researching, designing, and verifying the science before testing hundreds of individuals over multiple trials. In May 2017 the test launched, testing both ears against a multitude of sound frequencies at varying decibel volumes. It was the first online test accurate enough to program custom hearing aids from the results.
Why we made our hearing test an online test.
Glad you asked. We wanted to create an easier way for people, just like you, to get their hearing tested in a faster, more affordable, and more convenient, way than was previously available. So creating an online option allows us to help you learn about your hearing from home in just a matter of minutes, while still providing you accurate and instant results.
We feel it's a win, win, win.
What happens during our online hearing test.
After opening the Audicus Online Hearing Test in any web browser, you will be asked to enter some details to create a profile so your results can be personalized. The test requires headphones (ideally earbuds for accuracy) and takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Once completed, you will be instantly emailed your results for your records and will be offered a free consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the benefit of taking a hearing test online?
The main benefits are cost, convenience, and speed. The Online Hearing Test (OHT) is typically more accessible than alternative tests, many of which take longer to schedule and require payment.
Unlike other hearing tests, the OHT is free and doesn’t require an in-office visit with an audiologist, so you’re able to assess your hearing and order custom-programmed hearing aids all from home.
What is the Online Hearing Test?
The OHT is a pure-tone hearing test that’s been validated by extensive research and testing. First developed in 2015, it’s considered one of the best options for testing hearing online and is designed to make getting information about your hearing abilities easy, fast, and free.
How accurate is the Audicus Online Hearing Test?
The Online Hearing Test is highly accurate, having been validated by similar clinical measures. When compared to a Clinical Audiogram, which is considered the gold standard testing option, results are within 10 dBs 85% of the time.
Compare this to another clinical audiogram, which delivers results within 10 dBs 90% of the time, and you can see that both of these measures are quite effective at accurately assessing hearing loss.
Are Online Hearing Tests accurate?
Online hearing tests can be accurate, especially if they have proven reliability and validity like the Audicus OHT. That being said, it’s important to remember that online hearing tests are subject to errors just like any other self-administered assessment.
Equipment and environment are the primary factors that have been shown to impact accuracy. For example, there may be some variance depending on the headphones you wear, or how noisy the environment you take your test in is.
At Audicus, we also offer the option of having equipment, like headphones, sent to your home to reduce the opportunity for error. We also recommend all hearing tests be taken in a quiet environment free from distractions and that you keep your computer or tablet volume at 50% for the duration of the test.
Can this test diagnose my hearing impairment?
No. The test isn’t intended to be diagnostic in nature, but rather to be a tool used to help inform your hearing profile. The Online Hearing Test is considered a screener for hearing loss, instead of a comprehensive diagnostic assessment for hearing impairment.
What frequencies does the OHT assess?
The following frequencies are tested: 500, 1K, 2K, 4K, 8K. At each frequency, tones are played between 5 dB and 80 dB, with 85dB considered “not heard”.
How long does a hearing test take?
The OHT test is quick, taking just 5-10 minutes to complete.
How long will it take to get results?
To make things easy, results are available instantly. You’ll receive a follow-up email detailing your test results within an hour after taking the assessment.
How much does the OHT cost?
The online hearing test is completely free! You will not be charged to take the test.
