Our hearing aids last on average about 5 years, but can perform even longer with excellent care. The key to longevity is to store, clean, and care for your hearing aids properly - a little goes a long way!

Hearing Tests & Programming
The Audicus Online Hearing Test is the culmination of efforts by MIT neuroscience engineers. The test uses predictive pattern matching principles, testing each ear at six distinct frequencies. This comprehensive analysis establishes hearing thresholds in relation to both frequency and volume, backed by advanced error detection algorithms to guarantee precise results. Setting it apart from others, our test offers the level of detail necessary for the precise customization of hearing aids.
To take our Online Hearing Test, all you need is: an internet connection, about 10 minutes, wired earbuds, and a quiet room or setting. The test is free and will provide you with a comprehensive hearing loss profile for each ear. Following the test, our dedicated team will examine your results and reach out to you to review. Take our online hearing test HERE.
Great! You are able to submit a copy of your test results by clicking the link HERE. Audicus will use that information to program your hearing aids! Don’t have a copy of the test? Not to worry - you have the medical right to request and receive a copy of your hearing test at a reasonable price from your audiologist. Let Audicus help! Fill out a medical release form HERE.
Much like the way an eye test is crucial for obtaining the correct prescription for glasses, an up-to-date hearing test is essential in tailoring each hearing aid to precisely match your individual hearing loss. Tests older than 2+ years may not be reflective of your current hearing loss.
Common Hearing Aid Questions
OTC (Over-The-Counter) is a HUGE buzz word in the hearing aid industry. Audicus is considered OTC because we are an online retailer, which is a government mandated regulation. However, we are not to be confused with unprogrammed OTC devices being sold online and elsewhere. Amplifiers and other basic OTC devices come preprogrammed (not to your specific loss) and do not offer the same benefits as hearing aids.
Hearing aids are programmed to test results matching your specific hearing loss and are customized to maximize your benefits. Amplifiers are not programmed to specific test results and instead simply amplify present sounds.
Hearing aids are only meant to be an aid and cannot restore hearing once it has been lost. Hearing aids amplify sounds and speech signals for the purpose of aiding hearing, allowing you to communicate more effectively.
There is no single “best” style of hearing aid. You’ll have many options to choose from based on your individual listening & lifestyle needs. Factors to take into account include your type and degree of hearing loss, lifestyle needs, cosmetic preferences and budget. Our expert team of Hearing Specialists can help you make the right choice!
Hearing aid manufacturers have made huge advances in water-proofing their products, however only the most expensive ($10,000+) hearing aids currently on the market are water-proof.
- To understand our hearing aids’ level of moisture resistance we refer to an IP rating. IP ratings classify the level of protection that the casing of a hearing aid provides against solids and liquids entering and damaging the device. Audicus hearing aids have an IP Rating of 68. The 6 represents their ability to protect against dust that may harm the equipment. The 8 represents their ability to protect against temporary immersion in a moist environment (For context, an Apple iPhone also has an IP Rating of 68!).
- Despite advances in moisture protection, hearing aids are still prone to humidity and perspiration. It’s important to follow guidelines and suggestions for avoiding and dealing with moisture.
Bluetooth hearing aids work by using wireless technology to connect to other devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or computers. This connection allows the hearing aid wearer to stream audio directly from these devices, such as phone calls, music, or other media.
- The hearing aids have a built-in Bluetooth receiver that communicates with the transmitting device, using radio waves to send and receive data. In addition to streaming audio, our hearing aids can also be controlled through our smartphone app, allowing wearers to adjust settings like volume, bass, and treble, even change the program/mode of the hearing aid, and so much more!
Absolutely! Many of our customers wear hearing aids and glasses together comfortably. While there may be an adjustment period, a properly fitted hearing aid will stay put and not interfere with your glasses. Our support team will work with you to customize your hearing aid fit and ensure the best results.
Bluetooth FAQs
Our bluetooth hearing aids require Bluetooth version 4.2 and higher.
This app will allow you to control your Wave, Spirit, and Omni 2 hearing aids directly from your phone! To download, the app requires iOS version 15.0 or later, and Android version 8.0 and up.
- In order to begin pairing your hearing aids, you will have to turn both aids off and then on again. You can easily turn both hearing aids off and on by placing them in the charging dock (confirm that there is some kind of LED lights blinking on the hearing aids, indicating they are charging) and then removing them from the charging dock. The aids enter a Bluetooth pairing mode for 3 minutes after being turned on. (if you have disposable battery operated hearing aids, just OPEN then CLOSE the battery doors on each aid).
- Ensure that Bluetooth is enabled or turned on in your phone’s settings
- From your phone’s Bluetooth settings, select “R-Au Hearing Aid” from the list of available devices. You will only need to pair to the Right (R-Au Hearing Aid) Hearing Aid in order to simultaneously pair both devices.
- A melody is played when successfully paired.
- **Specifically for iPhone, you'll also want to do the following once you're connected**:
- From your iPhone Settings Menu > Accessibility > Touch > Call Audio Routing
- Switch Call Audio Routing from "Automatic" to "Bluetooth Headset"
- This will allow your calls to be automatically routed to the hearing aids when the hearing aids are turned on and in range of your phone.
- You will see a "Welcome" page, tap "Continue"
- Next, you'll see "Pair Your Hearing Aids"
- No need to view any instructions, just tap "Let's Get Started"
- The app will say "Searching, Looking for hearing aids" and a spinning loop.
- Once you see this screen, turn each hearing aid OFF then ON. You can place each aid in the charging case and remove it after it begins blinking - this enables pairing mode on each hearing aid.
- Shortly after, you'll see a box underneath the loop with two devices labeled "LE_L-Au Hearing Aid" & "LE_R-Au Hearing Aid" – tap on the box with the two names.
- You'll see it'll ask for a pairing request, tap "Pair" each time.
- Next, you'll see "You're unique. So is your hearing." Please select "Activate" (this is important later).
- You will have the option to select "Enable Notifications" tap "OK". It’ll next ask if you’d like to select “advanced” or “classic” mode – confirm your selection, the app’s settings will finalize, and you’re all set! (We’d recommend ‘advanced’ mode!)
When paired, phone calls are automatically transferred to your hearing aids. Your voice is picked up by the hearing aid’s microphones.
- To accept an incoming call, you will first hear a notification through the hearing aids.
- The call can be accepted by a short press of either the UP or DOWN toggle buttons or rejected with a long press (over 2 seconds).
- Alternatively, accepting the phone call on your phone will transfer the call to your hearing aids.
- End a call with a long press on your multifunction button (either UP or DOWN).
The ‘tap control’ functions on Series 2 devices allow the user to activate different functions on their smartphone through a double-tap on the hearing aid itself. To tailor these settings, open the Hearing Remote app > devices > tap control.
- You can customize the left and right hearing aids to pause/resume streaming, activate voice assistants (like Siri), or turn the setting off altogether. You are also able to adjust the sensitivity of the taps between gentle, normal, and firm.
If you are experiencing poor audio quality on bluetooth calls, you may need to adjust a setting in your remote app called “adaptive bluetooth”. You’ll want to open your hearing remote app > devices > adaptive bluetooth > toggle the blue switch OFF (it’ll turn gray). Once you have changed this setting, please turn each hearing aid OFF then back ON for the change to take effect.
For iPhone users, please ensure you have your ‘call audio routing’ settings accurately enabled! For more information, please see “Connecting to Bluetooth for calls/streaming”.
- For Android users, please tap on the little ‘gear/flower’ symbol next to “R-Au Hearing Aid” in your phone’s bluetooth menu. Ensure that ‘calls’ and ‘audio’ are both toggled ON.
Please complete one or more the following troubleshooting steps:
- Ensure Bluetooth is ON and enabled on your phone.
- Re-enable pairing mode on the hearing aids by turning them OFF and back ON again.
- Restart your smartphone by turning it completely OFF for 5 minutes and then turning it back ON.
- Completely delete, then re-download the Hearing Remote App.
- Please contact us if you continue to have issues after completing the above steps.
Tips for New Users
A hearing aid is a tiny electronic device that lives in a very corrosive environment (your ear!). It is very important to clean your hearing aids regularly because earwax, dirt, debris, moisture and heat can all cause damage.
- Weekly/Bi-Weekly - Wipe your hearing aid and rubber dome with a soft dry cloth to remove dirt and oil; we recommend our AudioWipes. Take your black cleaning brush and gently brush any openings/crevices on the hearing aids, specifically focus around the toggle buttons.
- Every 2 to 4 months - The domes should be replaced around the 3 month mark! An old dome loses its shape and does not properly seal in your ear canal, and is more likely to come off inside of your ear. It is also important to change your earwax guard every 3 months, as a blocked guard can cause your hearing aid to lose or stop producing sound entirely.
We always recommend doing this in front of a mirror until you are more accustomed to the process!
- First, make sure your hands are clean and dry to avoid transferring any dirt or moisture to the hearing aid.
- Second, place the hearing aid body over the top of your ear.
- Pull down and back on your earlobe to ease insertion. Hold the receiver box (which is what the rubber dome is attached to) and gently push the dome into your ear canal. When inserted properly, the dome should not be visible in your canal. Use your pinky to ease insertion.
- To take off the hearing aid, first remove the dome using the retention guard. Then, gently remove the body of the aid from behind your ear. Try to minimize pulling on the wire as much as you can! (there is also a picture right below this that we should still include, and also a video that kristen made that would be good here)
We have 3 styles of domes available for our receiver-in-canal hearing aids - Open, Closed and Double. Each style of dome varies in the level of natural sounds it lets in, and each style best benefits different kinds of hearing loss.
- Your hearing aid will come with a medium sized dome installed, and the style will be based on your hearing loss profile and what our Audiology team thinks will provide you with the most benefit.
- We’ll include a bag of alternative dome styles & sizes should the one pre-installed need to be adjusted for comfort/experience. (please include picture of dome styles underneath this)
Getting a proper fit means first knowing how to properly insert the hearing aid. See “How do I put on a hearing aid”. If the hearing aid continues to fall out of your ear, ask this question: “Is the hearing aid coming out of the canal or from behind the ear?” (please include picture of good fit at the bottom of all this)
- If the hearing aid is falling out of the ear canal - Push the dome deeper into your canal. You should not be able to see the dome when it is properly inserted, so you may need to size up or down. You may also find removing the retention guard allows the device to sit more comfortably.
- If the hearing aid is falling out from behind the ear - We may need to adjust the length of your receiver wire! Please reach out to our customer support team via text at 929-467-7096 with a picture of how the hearing aid is fitting in your ear. We can take a look and make adjustments to the devices moving forward!
The retention guard is the plastic “tailpiece” on the end of the receiver on your hearing aids (what the rubber dome is attached to). It both helps keep the hearing aid in place in your ear, and also helps with removal of the device.
- The guard itself will curl up into the inner, ‘bowl’ shaped part of your ear and will gradually take the shape of your ear with continued use. You are welcome to trim the length as needed or remove entirely. (please include infographic about how they are removed, and include picture of good fit w/ retention guard)
Plenty of people experience itchy ear canals when first getting started with their new aids! It’s 100% normal and just your body’s natural response to having something in its ear all the time.
- To ease symptoms, we recommend using a little Vaseline, Aquaphor, or coconut oil in the ear canal before wearing the devices and/or overnight. This helps keep the canals moisturized and should reduce itchiness. You may also find adjusting the size of your dome helps as well.
- All Audicus domes are medical-grade, hypoallergenic silicon pieces. If you suspect you are having an allergic reaction, please contact your doctor.
The drying capsule’s role is to absorb moisture from the hearing aids while they are charging. You’ll insert the capsule into the lid of the charging case, with the paper side up. It’ll need to be replaced when the color changes from orange to white, which happens every 4-6 months. (include picture here)

Our warranty covers any reprogramming for the life of the device. Like a prescription for glasses, your hearing loss may change over time or some simple adjustments may need to be done once you have become accustomed to the new devices. Learn more about the process HERE. If you think you may need a programming update, contact help@audicus.com or call 917-999-0705.
Most of the repairs we see are due to earwax/dirt/debris build up. These repairs can be avoided by proper cleaning and maintenance, however if you have tried to clean your device and still think it may need a repair, call us at 917-999-0705 or email help@audicus.com. From there we’ll assign you a repair Support Order Number (SUPO) and provide shipping instructions for the device(s). Repairs typically fall into these categories:
- In-House Repair: usually the hearing aids have stopped functioning/producing sound and are cleaned and tested for defects in our office. The cost of this service out of warranty is $40 for a single device / $50 for a pair. This process typically takes 2-3 days.
- Manufacturer Repair: Hearing aids with more extensive damage (like moisture, physical defects, etc) need extra servicing outside our office with our manufacturer. Out of warranty, this repair costs $199/device and takes about 7-14 days.
- Replacement: In the event your hearing aid is unable to be repaired, you will be offered a trade-in credit option to be applied to the purchase of a brand new hearing aid. The trade-in value will be based on the age and current condition of your devices. Our customer support team will contact you regarding the details of your repair and the trade-in value.

Rechargeable FAQs
To manually turn your aids on, press and hold the DOWN toggle button for 4-5 seconds until the indicator light changes to green. To turn them off, press and hold the same DOWN toggle button for 6 seconds until the indicator light on the hearing aid flashes red. What’s cool about our rechargeable hearing aids is that they actually automatically turn ON when removed from the charger, and turn off when they are placed to charge!
Ensure the charging case is plugged into an outlet, and you see a little green light next to where the cord plugs into the case. Place each hearing aid into its designated red or blue charging port.
- When the lights on the aids are flashing red, yellow, or green, they are charging! When the lights turn solid green, the aids are fully charged. Remove, and they’ll turn on and be ready to go! (please include picture of HAs in the charger)
It takes 3-5 hours for your hearing aids to fully charge, but you’re welcome to charge them overnight while you’re sleeping. The battery should last about 16 hours once fully charged. Please do not leave your hearing aid(s) charging for more than 48 hours - this can cause damage to the battery. Year to year, the rechargeable battery is not replaced, and is meant to last as long as the hearing aid, about 5 years.
310 & 312 Battery FAQs
Gently swing open the battery door with your fingernail and push out the old battery. Remove the plastic tab from the new battery, and wait 1 minute for the battery to activate. You’ll want to line up the battery’s plus “+” sign (flat side of the battery) with the “+” on the battery door. Close the battery door gently. The hearing aid will play a melody as it turns on (include picture here)
The hearing aid can be turned ON by closing the battery door with the battery inserted; and the aid can be turned OFF by opening the battery door. You do not need to remove the battery completely, just make sure it’s not touching the inside of the battery door.
312 style batteries last between 5-7 days, however excessive bluetooth streaming usage will drain the battery more quickly. Size 10 style batteries last between 3-5 days. To ensure your batteries last as long as possible, make sure you let them sit out in the air after you pull the tab for 1-2 minutes before use.
Mini Hearing Aid Support
The Mini hearing aid comes with the following supplies:
- Domes - these come in sizes small, medium, and large with an xs option available upon request. They come in a ‘closed’ and ‘vented’ style option. Please contact customer support at help@audicus.com or 917-999-0705 if you are unsure what size and style you have/need. (include picture)
- Earwax guards - these are the small white filters on the end of the hearing aid, underneath the dome. Be sure to replace these every 2-3 months to ensure the longevity of your device(s). (include picture of replacements here)
- Size 10 batteries - these last on average between 3-5 days! You’ll want to line up the battery’s plus “+” sign (flat side of the battery) with the “+” on the battery door.
- Components - include picture/diagram here
- Dimensions - include picture of device, Length: 17.4 mm (0.7 in), Height: 11.9 mm (0.5 in), Width: 5.6 mm (0.2 in)
The blue device goes in your left ear and the red device in your right. To achieve a good fit, you’ll want to fully insert the Mini into your ear canal, with the retention guard (small plastic tailpiece) facing down towards your earlobe. When inserted properly, the aid should be virtually invisible. (insert picture of my fit here)
To control the hearing aids, the user will need to either download the Rexton App [available for iPhones and Androids] or through using the Mini Remote.
Please follow the instructions below:
- The first screen will ask you to “Choose a connection option”, please select “Manual”.
- Next you’ll see: “is your hearing aid a ‘Rexton 5A' model?”, please select “No”.
- The app will ask you to “Prepare the connection”, please go into a quiet environment, and turn each aid OFF then ON individually by opening and closing the battery door.
- Tap ‘Connect Now’ at the bottom of the screen (yellow button). A confirmation tone should sound in BOTH ears, and the app will ask you if you heard the tone. Please select either yes if you heard the tones or no if you did not.
- Next it’ll ask “Do your hearing aids support Directional hearing?”, please tap No.
- On the following screen you’ll see “Do you know the number of hearing programs?” and you’ll either tap ‘4' or '5’, depending upon if you requested to have a tinnitus masking program set into your hearing aids (if you did, select 5).
- It’ll ask again if you have a tinnitus masker, please select yes or no depending on your above answer.
- Lastly, please accept the terms and conditions, and “Skip TeleCare Setup”
Maintenance
Preventing moisture in hearing aids is important for maintaining their functionality and prolonging their lifespan. These are some ways to prevent moisture:
- CNC Dry Cap: this is the desiccant tablet that comes in a small container with pink beads that can absorb moisture from your hearing aids overnight. (Rechargeable devices only)
- UV Dry Box: this is an electronic device that uses UV light to remove moisture from your hearing aids. (Standard battery operated devices only)
- Keep your hearing aids dry: Avoid exposing your hearing aids to water, such as when showering or swimming. Be sure to wipe your hearing aids dry after sweating or being in a humid environment.
- Open the battery compartment: When you’re not using your hearing aids, open the battery compartment to allow air to circulate and prevent moisture buildup. (Standard battery operated devices only)
The most important thing to prevent the devices from being lost, is ensuring they are fitted properly! An ill-fitting hearing aid is way more likely to come dislodged from your ear. Read more about proper fitting HERE. (link to fitting in SC) You’ll also want to make sure you replace the domes regularly, as old domes lose their shape and function, making them more likely to pop out. If you’re extra worried, we highly recommend the retention clip, which makes it so if the hearing aids fall out, they simply fall around your neck and not to the ground. More info HERE.
Something we see all too often is both dogs and cats getting ahold of their owner’s hearing aids! They collect both earwax and smell like their owner, which is incredibly enticing to pets. Dogs and cats will not hesitate to chew right through the hearing aids, which can cause permanent damage. Be sure that if you have pets, you store your hearing aids on a high surface/safe space and enclosed in their case.
To ensure the longevity of your device(s) we recommend performing the following steps every 2-3 months:
- Replacing your domes - you’ll want to completely replace the dome on each device with a brand new one of your preferred style and size. Domes lose their effectiveness over time, and will cause a diminished sound experience as a result. Gently pull the dome off of the end of the receiver to remove.
- Replacing your ear wax guards - in tandem with the domes, we also recommend replacing the ear wax guard filters on each device. These are the little white filters that sit underneath the dome and prevent wax from getting into the receiver. If these become clogged, it can prevent sound from being transmitted into your ear.
- Picture of how to for SDS 4.0 here
- Picture of how to for SDS 5.0 here
- In terms of weekly maintenance, we recommend that you use the black cleaning brush on your hearing aids to clear up any debris and to wipe down the dome and body of the devices with an AudioWipe as needed.
